5 Things You Must Have Before Getting A New Gym Website

Today’s topic is all about what you need to do if you want to build a new website for your CrossFit® Affiliate, your PT studio, or your functional fitness centre.

The first thing you need to do is:

PURCHASE A DOMAIN NAME. The problem many people make is getting their web developer to buy the domain name for them. This makes it difficult in the future if you ever want to change supplier since your current web developer has control of your domain name. Your domain name is your intellectual property, so I recommend purchasing that yourself. I personally use GoDaddy to register my domain names and I recommend you do the same.

The second thing you need to do is:

SORT OUT THE WRITTEN CONTENT for your website. Many people really hate to write content and I totally get it. If that’s you, I’ve put together some content for you to use. You can download that content for free and I would recommend just tweaking whatever you want so it’s personalised to your style and business. If you do want to write the content by yourself, the key is to make sure you’re thinking about people that don’t know what CrossFit® is. Make sure you’re writing content that everyday people can understand, after all, you’re potential clients are people that have likely never tried Crossfit. Gear your content towards potential clients and share your passion with them.

The third thing you need is:

HIGH QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHS. I’ve seen a lot of stock photography websites and the reality is, most of the photos they have are really bad. I would recommend that you shoot some of your own photographs. If you’re not a good photographer that’s okay, even using an iPhone 6, 6S or 7 or basic Digital SLR camera is enough. The SLR camera that I’m shooting this video on, for example, is only $500. You can buy a camera like that and shoot some photos that will make your site a whole lot better.

The next thing you need is:

A LOGO FOR YOUR WEBSITE. To get a logo I recommend using something like 99Designs.com if you’re looking for something cheap. If you’re looking to get something really good from the outset I’d be paying for a graphic designer to sit down with you and set up a great logo for your gym. 3 tips for getting a great logo:

  • Your logo should be simple, memorable and easily recognisable at a glance. Simple logos stand out more than ones with lots of tiny details.
  • Choose your colours carefully and don’t forget to make sure your logo works equally well in black and white.
  • Make sure your logo is scalable. This means it’s still recognisable when its on a large sign out the front of your gym, and also when it’s shrunk down to fit on a business card. This also ties in to having a simple logo without too much ‘clutter’.

So once you’ve got the domain name, you’ve got the photographs and you’ve got the written content done. The logo is complete and now you’re almost ready to put it all together.

The last step is:

CHOOSING WHO WILL BUILD YOUR NEW CROSSFIT WEBSITE. If you’d like to build your new CrossFit website yourself then I’d recommend you go onto Themeforest, purchase a WordPress template and use A2 Hosting (or another great hosting provider) to set up the WordPress platform for you. Then you can install that template and build the site yourself. If you’d like to get a web developer to do it for you then come chat to us and let us save you time, money and hassle.
